Sampdoria at a Crossroads as Ownership Battle Heats Up

The future of UC Sampdoria is increasingly tied to the next move of Joseph Tey, a low-profile figure now stepping into the spotlight.

According to reports, the Singapore-based investor has intensified efforts in recent months to gain full control of the club, pushing current president Matteo Manfredi to sell his stake in the Luxembourg-based holding company that oversees the club. Negotiations have accelerated and could soon lead to a leadership transition.

Pressure builds behind the scenes

Despite maintaining a deliberately discreet profile, Tey is now approaching a decisive moment. While player salaries have continued to be paid on time—and upcoming obligations are expected to be met—there are signs of operational slowdown.

Several internal expenses have reportedly been paused, and key decisions, including youth sector renewals and staff appointments requested by sporting CEO Jesper Fredberg, have been delayed. Such patterns often signal pending structural changes at ownership level.

Financial reality looms

The club’s financial situation remains fragile. The upcoming approval of the 2025 accounts is expected to confirm another loss-making year, reinforcing the need for continued investor support ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Without fresh capital, a sale remains a real possibility.

Strategic silence, growing expectations

So far, Tey has not publicly outlined a detailed strategy. The only indication of his vision came in a letter released in September, where he set a target of returning Sampdoria to Serie A by 2028—a statement that drew mixed reactions from supporters.

Now, with control potentially within reach, he will be expected to clarify both his financial commitment and long-term sporting plan.

Sale option still alive

Interest from external investors remains on the table, with the club still viewed as an attractive asset despite its financial challenges. Legal representatives on both sides are reportedly reviewing multiple expressions of interest.

Time, however, is limited.

As deadlines approach, Sampdoria faces a defining period—one that will determine whether the club enters a new era under Tey’s leadership or changes hands once again.
