Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff Dismisses Jurgen Klopp Departure Rumors as “Complete Nonsense”

Red Bull’s CEO of corporate projects and investments, Oliver Mintzlaff, has officially shut down reports claiming that Jurgen Klopp could be leaving his role as Global Head of Soccer. Despite a contract running until 2029, recent rumors suggested Klopp might return to coaching following high-profile vacancies at clubs like Real Madrid or the German national team.

In a statement to The Athletic, Mintzlaff described the speculation—originally published by the Austrian paper Salzburger Nachrichten—as “totally unfounded” and “complete nonsense.”

1. The Context of the Rumors

The rumors gained traction following the dismissal of Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid in January 2026. Additionally, critics pointed toward a perceived “lack of sporting progress” within the Red Bull network, which includes:

  • RB Leipzig (Germany)
  • Red Bull Salzburg (Austria)
  • New York Red Bulls (USA)
  • Red Bull Bragantino (Brazil)
  • RB Omiya Ardija (Japan)

2. Red Bull’s Full Support

Mintzlaff emphasized that the organization is “extremely satisfied” with the former Liverpool manager’s impact since he joined in January 2025.

  • Strategic Role: Klopp is tasked with scouting and developing coaches and refining the “Red Bull football philosophy.”
  • Mintzlaff’s Stance: “He is in constant communication with our coaches and sporting directors. We are convinced he is the right man for the job.”

3. Klopp’s Perspective: At Peace with the Role

Jurgen Klopp, who led Liverpool to Premier League and Champions League glory, has reiterated his commitment to his current executive path.

  • No Immediate Return to Coaching: Klopp stated in January that while he knows he can coach, he doesn’t feel the need to do it until his last day.
  • A New Chapter: “I wanted to do something different. I’m in a place where I’m completely at peace. I don’t want to be somewhere else,” Klopp told The Athletic.
