SYDNEY – Football Australia has ended its eight-month leadership search by appointing former Stan CEO Martin Kugeler as its new Chief Executive. Kugeler succeeds James Johnson, who departed in May 2025, and takes the helm during a pivotal year for the sport in Australia.
A Media-Centric Leadership
Kugeler joins from the streaming platform Stan, bringing a background in finance, strategy, and global media. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to boost commercial growth and innovation, especially as the organization prepares to host the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and enters the build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Leadership Structure & Continuity
To ensure stability, interim CEO and former national team player Heather Garriock will transition into a newly created role:
- Role: Executive Director of Football and Deputy CEO.
- Purpose: To maintain executive football leadership and strategic alignment during the transition.
The Road Ahead
Kugeler faces the task of building on the “golden era” established by his predecessor, which included record revenues and the successful co-hosting of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
“There isn’t a sport in the country that can match the potential for growth inherent in our game,” Kugeler stated. “My focus will be on innovation and enhanced commercial outcomes to increase investment back into the game.”
