The Big 12 Conference is once again pushing the boundaries of sports entertainment. Commissioner Brett Yormark announced that the 2026 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments in Kansas City will be played on a full LED video sports floor.

While this technology has been showcased in exhibition settings like the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend and European EuroLeague games, this marks the first time it will be used for an official, high-stakes competition in the United States.

The Tech: ASB GlassFloor “LumiFlex”

Provided by German innovator ASB GlassFloor, the surface is not your typical hardwood. It is a high-performance system designed to mimic the feel of traditional floors while unlocking digital capabilities.

  • Material: Two layers of 5mm laminated safety glass.
  • Grip & Safety: The surface is deeply etched with burnt-in ceramic dots to provide the exact slide and friction levels of a wood floor, while a double-spring aluminum substructure offers 2.5x more elasticity than wood, reducing joint strain.
  • Capabilities: The “LumiFlex” model allows for full-motion video, meaning the court can change designs, display live shot charts, show player-tracking “flame trails,” and run interactive games during timeouts—all in real-time.

Why Now? Branding and Engagement

The move is part of the “Big 12 as a different league” branding strategy. The LED floor offers a massive new canvas for:

  1. Sponsor Activations: Brands can “take over” the entire floor during key moments or commercial breaks.
  2. Fan Experience: In-arena fans will see replays and stats directly under the players’ feet, bringing the broadcast experience into the stadium.
  3. Player Performance: Tracking data can visualize “X’s and O’s” for fans to see strategy unfolding in real-time.

Key Dates in Kansas City

  • Women’s Tournament: Starts March 4, 2026, at the T-Mobile Center.
  • Men’s Tournament: Starts March 10, 2026, at the T-Mobile Center.

Kansas head coach Bill Self, a self-described “old school guy,” expressed his approval, calling it the “wave of the future.” As the Big 12 currently boasts a powerhouse roster of Top 25 teams, all eyes will be on Kansas City to see if this glass surface becomes the new gold standard for elite basketball.
