The Germany SailGP Team has successfully closed a significant funding round, bringing on board two of the most influential names in global sports investment: David Blitzer and Blue Pool Capital.

This capital injection marks a pivotal moment for the team, which is led by double Olympic medalist Erik Heil and owned by German media businessman Thomas Riedel. The new investors join a high-profile ownership group that already includes four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel and esports mogul Ralf Reichert.

Strategic Minority Stakes

The funding round was led by Bolt Ventures (David Blitzer’s family office) and Blue Pool Capital (the wealth management fund for Alibaba co-founders, including Joe Tsai).

  • Bolt Ventures: Has acquired a 27% stake in the team.
  • Blue Pool Capital: Joins as a minority investor, leveraging its deep expertise in the NBA (Brooklyn Nets) and WNBA (New York Liberty).
  • Thomas Riedel: Remains the majority shareholder with approximately 56% ownership.
  • Sebastian Vettel: Maintains a 7.1% stake in the team.

Other participants in this round include Lester Fernandes (CEO of Segovia Capital), Maximilian Arnold (VfL Wolfsburg captain), and the Viessmann Generations Group, which took a 3.5% stake.

Elevating the League’s Valuation

The investment reflects the rapid growth of SailGP as a premium global sports property. Originally acquired for approximately €20 million in 2023, the German team’s license is now valued between €50 million and €70 million.

David Blitzer, the first person to hold equity in all five major US sports leagues, highlighted the synergy between sailing and high-performance technology:

“SailGP combines elite global sport, cutting-edge technology, and a growing international fanbase. We’re excited to partner with Thomas and Sebastian, whose long-term vision aligns with our approach to world-class sports platforms.”

Looking Ahead: The 2026 Season

The Germany SailGP Team, which is title-sponsored by Deutsche Bank, is currently competing in the expanded 2026 season. Fans can look forward to the series’ annual German race, held in Sassnitz, which is scheduled for August 22–23, 2026.

This influx of capital will be used to drive technical development on the F50 catamaran and expand the team’s international brand presence, mirroring the commercial strategies seen in top-tier soccer and motorsport.
